Updates from August 2001 thru mid-2002

Fairs and festivals are some of my favorite events, and the Ohio State Fair is one of the largest in the nation. I had lots of fun taking pictures of families from all over Ohio. It was H-O-T, but that didn't stop me from adding fun to folk's trip to the Fair. The highlight for me was agriculture contest winners sending TING's of themselves with their prize ribbons back home to friends and family. I'll be back next August!

I returned to the Columbus German Village Oktoberfest, but I also enjoyed another Columbus festival, The Italian Festival. Mama Mia, the food was great! This festival was smaller than most I've been to, but it packs lots of fun into a small area. I particularly enjoyed taking photos of people in traditional Italian dress. I loved the neighborhood ambiance of this festival with it's emphasis on family.

By far my most memorable event so far was the 2002 Winter Olympics here in America, held in February in Utah. Talk about a photo opportunity! I had the privilege of being part of the Olympics and meeting people from around the world.

The Anheuser-Busch Company hosted me in Park City, site of many Olympic events. I had fun taking photos of people in the VIP Hospitality lounge, and also outside at Budweiser World and with the famous Budweiser Clydesdales. I partied the night away at The Last Lap, the Athlete Entertainment Venue nightclub, where I took photos of numerous Olympic athletes, including gold metal winners, and a host of celebrities. I also spent time at Powder Mountain Ski Resort, taking photos of skiers and snowboarders. What a beautiful background the snow covered Wasatch Mountains make!

The spirit of the Olympic Games is something I'll never forget.

I love meeting and photographing vacationers and travelers, so my new location in Pennsylvania at Leonard Harrison State Park is a natural for me. People stop here to view Pennsylvania's "Grand Canyon", Pine Creek Gorge, while traveling the popular scenic Route 6.

I have a new location at Lake Erie! I'm taking lakefront photos in downtown Port Clinton at the Island Rocket ferryboat dock. This is my first Lake Erie mainland location. Now people vacationing and visiting the shoreline can send Lake Erie TINGs just like those visiting Put-in-Bay and South Bass Island State Park. I'm right on the waterfront, so people can take pictures with their boat, show the fish they caught, or just take a nice waterfront background picture.

My latest location is The Frog Bear & Wild Boar Bar, located at the entrance of Nationwide Arena in downtown Columbus. This is a very popular place, and I move outside occasionally to use the downtown buildings and the Arena entrance as photo backgrounds. I love being part of the special events held in the plaza, and greeting out-of-town business travelers coming in for lunch, dinner, or just to relax.

July 20-22, 2001. Columbus, OH

The Columbus Jazz and Rib Fest 2001.  700,000 people for the weekend and we were non-stop.  TING was sponsored by City Center and the Columbus Chamber.  Here we are in front of COSI and the pictures look great.

This event was enjoyed by all ages.  The music was fantastic and the food....let me say this, "I will be on a diet for the next 10 years after all that I ate".

Some of the bands that played were Spyro Gyra, Blues Traveler, Lonnie Brooks, Yumbambe, Tim Bowman, Urban Jazz Coalition and Joe Sample.

This was a good time.

Chiller Ice Rinks
Dublin and Easton
December, 2000
Columbus, Ohio

Ice skaters, hockey players, broomball players, and others welcomed me to the Chiller Ice Rinks in December. I always enjoy being around   fun activities, especially when there's more than one. I've taken photos of kids, teen-agers, and adult ice skaters, figure skaters, hockey players, broomball players, and a host of other people watching these events.

My favorite is the Friday Night Meltdown ice skating session, with it's music, contests, and hundreds of kids and teens. I also love the crowds at the youth and high school hockey games - they get rowdy! Come on out to either rink and enjoy one of these activities, and send a TING photo e-mail from the Chillers!

Snow Trails
December, 2000
Mansfield, Ohio

It's winter, and the best place to photograph people having winter fun is a ski resort, especially when the resort is celebrating their 40th anniversary!

I arrived at Snow Trails in January, and since then have been learning the ski resort lifestyle. I took the photo's that are probably the first-ever-live photo e-mails sent from a ski resort! Many people want to send a live photo of themselves and friends dressed for the slopes and holding their skis/snowboards.

Snow Trails is Ohio's first and finest Winter Resort, so I'm proud to be here. See you on the slopes (or by the lodge fire) at Snow Trails!

Dedication of Marker
First Ship to Shore Radio Broadcast 1907

The first ship to shore radio broadcast was in 1907. Lee DeForest and Frank Butler broadcast the world's first ship-to-shore radio transmission at Put-In-Bay, Ohio during the annual I-LYA Regatta.

Thelma, the Steam Yacht of Commodore Huntington, was the first ship to be outfitted for such a broadcast. Extensive remodeling was required for this first broadcast.

The Yacht, Thelma, was renamed The Electra, for the regatta races.

Lee DeForest was stationed on The Electra on the race course. He radioed Frank Butler, who manned the receiving unit located at the Fox Dock, now known as the Jet Express Dock.

TING was there for the dedication of the historic marker, sponsored by Lake Erie Islands Historical Society, and applauded the success of those pioneering efforts of Lee DeForest and Frank Butler.  It is triumphs from our past that pave the way for innovations of technology today, such as TING.
